Planned Giving
In understanding the significant impact – both locally and globally – of our shared mission through our Convention, many people often wish that they had the means to do more. The good news is that by making a legacy gift to the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches, you can participate in the cooperative work of Atlantic Baptists both now and after your death.
Our Convention is in a position to receive legacies through a variety of means:
- Bequests through your will
- Life insurance as a gift
- Gifts of real property
- Gifts of securities
Wills
The will is usually the central instrument in any estate plan. It directs the disposition of all assets not already directed by other legal agreements.
The needs of one’s family is always a primary concern in the planning of a will, but for many of us there is also the desire to, at the least, ‘tithe’ on our estate as a testamentary expression of the centrality of Christ’s Lordship both in life and in death. Some donors choose to go beyond the literal ‘tithe’ (tenth) by dividing their estate by the number of children plus one, with the extra portion being directed towards the advance of God’s Kingdom. Through directing such a gift – whether a specific amount or a percentage of your estate – to our Convention you will invest in ensuring that there are vibrant, healthy, Christ-proclaiming churches in Atlantic Canada and beyond.
A bequest through your will is an opportunity to make a meaningful gift without reducing your present assets.
Life Insurance
For some people the gift of a life insurance policy is the best way to make a contribution to the future work of Atlantic Baptists. Your insurance agent can name our Convention as a joint or sole beneficiary of a new or an existing policy. Upon your death the proceeds will go into the Lord's work.
A second option is to make the Convention both owner and beneficiary of the policy.
(Both of these options offer specific income tax benefits that can be discussed privately with the Director of Development.)
Gifts of Real Property
Private and even commercial land and buildings can often make a source of funding for a charitable gift. Real property may be given outright or as part of an irrevocable trust, which may avoid some capital gains taxes.
Sometimes a property can become a creative gift to the Lord's work. It may be suitable for direct use by our Convention, or in most cases it can be sold to fund a gift.
Gifts of Securities
Another excellent method of funding a gift is transferring of stocks, bonds, shares and other securities. You can irrevocably assign securities to the United in Mission fund as a gift, which may entitle you to tax benefits as compared to selling these securities first and then donating the proceeds to our Convention.
Faithful Stewards
Our Convention can also receive gifts that are to be directed towards the support of one or more specific ministries such as your local church, Atlantic Baptist University and/or Acadia Divinity College, one of our sixteen denominational camps, or Canadian Baptist Ministries.
If you are considering a lasting gift and would like further information, contact Rev. Greg Jones, Director of Development.
