Rev Elias M. Mutale is a native of Zambia in South Central Africa. He has two brothers and four sisters. He is married to Sheena and they have four lovely girls and a large extended family in Canada. Mrs. Sheena Mutale is honorary president of the Zambian Community in Nova Scotia.
Prior to entering the ministry, Rev Mutale trained and had a brief career in Journalism before branching out into Personnel Administration and Operations Management. Rev. Mutale was instrumental in the opening of the Zambia office of World Vision where he served first as Project Coordinator and later as Director of Operations, a deputy Director position. He gave his life to the Lord in 1975 and immediately became active as a lay person. He served as youth leader, Lay preacher, church planter and pastor for 11 years prior to entering theological college in Zambia in 1987. He is a vigorous sportsman who plays, coaches and referees soccer.
The Mutales came to Canada in 1988 when Mrs. Mutale was awarded a scholarship to study at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Rev Mutale transferred from the Theological College of Central Africa in Ndola, Zambia to Acadia Divinity College in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree in May 1990. Mrs. Mutale graduated with a Master’s Degree in Counseling that year. While waiting for Mrs. Mutales completion of studies and graduation, Rev Mutale accepted a two and half months Summer ministry as pastor of Billtown/Woodville United Baptist Churches. The Summer lasted eight years, one month and nine days. Both churches grew during that time doubling the Sunday morning attendance of the two church parish.
In Canada, he has served on the Board of Acadia Divinity College, Family and Children’s Services in Kings County and was a key member of the Black Education Committee of Kings. He also represented the association on the Council For African Canadian Education, (CACE) the AUBA publicity committee and still serves on the Licensing and Mission Committees of the African United Baptist Association.
In 1998, the family moved to Dartmouth where Rev. Mutale became pastor of Victoria Road United Baptist Church following the retirement of the legendary Rev. Dr. Donald E. Fairfax. Rev. Mutale put his energy into transforming this small church into an influential growing urban church. He established many community projects in pursuit of holistic ministry. Church ministries were thriving and attendance had gone from forty to over one hundred and twenty when Rev. Mutale was asked to take on a denominational position as one of seven Regional Ministers to over see ministry in the African United Baptist Association in 2002. In November 2007, he was reappointed to another five year term. Rev Mutale is also named in the 2007 “Who is Who” book on Black Canadians.
He represents the African Association at Convention staff meetings, and works with the Convention, the African Association and churches to facilitate strategic planning and leadership development. He also gives a visible presence everywhere of the African Association. Considered a great encourager, he is a sought after preacher in our convention and beyond. Please pray for God’s strength and wisdom for effective leadership during the second mandate.
